Previous Client Work: Brand Photography for Inkgesteld

CGScreative Brand Photography for INKgesteld Studio by Roxy Hutton-01.png

A little while ago, I had the pleasure of working with the dynamic duo; Chantelle & Louis from INKgesteld Studio in Pretoria. Chantelle found me on Instagram, and after a few informal chats over social media, she told me her husband and her were in need of professional portraits for their brand. As Chantelle and Louis are based in Pretoria and I am in KZN, we had to work on our schedules a bit to find the next available time I was in Joburg They didn’t need to wait to long, as I am often there visiting family, and so we set up a time and I headed to their home based studio for their shoot.

We spent a wonderful morning together, capturing the essence of their unique brand. I set about creating a mixture of styled lifestyle shots, flatlays, and also took some headshots of each of them, as well as of the two of them together.

All of the above forms part of my Creative Head Package (click here to find out more about this package) and I always enjoy mixing all of the elements together to create brand imagery for a range of different uses.

The INKgested brand is sophisticated, edgy and modern, and quite different to brands I had worked with before. Because of this, I was so excited to meet them both and see their home based studio. This was also my first time working with a couple, as I had only worked with individuals before, and I just had the best time with them both. Their home was absolutely gorgeous, like something out of a magazine, and the moment I stepped foot in their studio I was beside myself with excitement and would have spent the entire day there photographing every single centimetre of the place.

Below are a selection of the images I created exclusively for INKgesteld.

If you're interested in finding out more about my headshot packages, then please feel free to get in touch. Each package includes a good mixture of styled stock type images as well as pretty portraits.

I spent such a great a morning with Chantelle & Louis, and I've loved working with fellow creatives in helping them create a professional, but unique look for their brands.

Here are some kind words from Chantelle about our time spent working together:

“My sweet Roxy, from a professional point of view I want to commend you for your brilliant communication with us. For getting to know us in such a short time and then capturing us with our message in mind. Thank you for taking control but still remaining creatively free to get the best out of us. You were completely aware of my fear but managed to make that disappear so effortlessly – only a master could do that. And that is what you are. Thank you for editing and finalising the images in such a short time, we appreciate the hours you spent in front of your computer to put your final touches on each image. I wish you great success and happiness in everything you do.

From a personal level thank you soooooo very much for ALL THE EXTRA WORK you gave so freely. It was such a wonderful experience for Louis and myself and especially Amelie. I want you to know that you are always welcome here…your husband and daughter too! We would love to see you any time that you have available to share with us. We owe you a tour….we owe you so much more than that.

I can’t wait to see the pictures!!! Take care of yourself. I will be in touch. You are one on my favourite persons in this world!” Chantelle - INKgesteld

Previous Client Work: Brand Photography for Whisky of the Week

Brand Photography for Whisky Blog Whisky Of the Week by Roxy Hutton of CGScreative-01.png

A little while ago, I had the pleasure of working with the fabulous Jeanette from the whisky & lifestyle blog, Whisky Of The Week. Jeanette was in need of some updated brand imagery for her blog, and we spent a great afternoon together capturing the essence of her brand. I created a mixture of styled lifestyle shots, flatlays, and also took some updated headshots for Jeanette to use on her social media channels.

All of the above forms part of my Creative Head Package (click here to find out more about this package) and I always so enjoy mixing all of the elements together to create brand imagery for a range of different uses.

The WhiskyOfTheWeek brand is sophisticated, but still down to earth and fun. The main readership has been male, but Jeanette wanted to show women how whisky can also be a ladies drink. She also blogs about whisky pairings with food, from pairings with cheese to chocolate, and also whisky cocktails.

For her brand photoshoot, she was after something different to the generic 'whisky & cigar look' that is common amongst whisky bloggers. She also didn't want to alienate men, but rather, to appeal to both.

Below are a selection of the images I created exclusively for Whisky Of The Week

If you're interested in finding out more about my headshot packages, then please feel free to get in touch. Each package includes a good mixture of styled stock type images as well as pretty portraits.

Jeanette and her husband have been collecting whisky for over 9 years, and both are truly passionate about the drink.

They have an incredible whisky tasting room in their home, where they keep their vast collection of whiskies. It's also where to spend most of their Friday evenings, tasting a new whisky and relaxing after a long week. I knew we had to get some great shots there too.

I had such a great time with Jeanette, and I've loved working with fellow bloggers and helping them create a professional, but pretty look for their brands. It's one of the biggest reasons I started my business and it has been a dream of mine to work with more bloggers.

Here are some very kind words from Jeanette about our time together:

"I met Roxy at one of the Blogger #Jozimeetups after having followed her journey to the East online.  She had a slot as a speaker and her way of looking at the world around her made an impression.  They had just returned to SA and I jumped at the opportunity of working with her. I needed updated profile photos and header photos for my blog and also some guidance on how to creatively take photos of bottles.  It was towards the end of the year and I also asked Roxy to take a few photos of me and my little one so that I can give it as a gift for the grannies over Christmas.

We had a few Skype calls to chat about my requirements and I voiced my frustration at my struggles of taking photos of glass bottles.  Roxy arrived with loads of ideas of how to position bottles with props and used this to create beautiful header photos for my blog. The best of all was she gave me so much inspiration and ideas on how to take my own photos for blog posts.   Roxy also took amazing profile photos.  It was so easy to work with her and to be comfortable in front of the camera with her chatting and giving guidance.  The true skill came out in her photos of my daughter which captured her wonderful nature perfectly.  These photos made very special gifts for the grannies.

Working with Roxy was an amazing experience which enhanced my blog with professional photos.  She is creative and wonderful to work with." Jeanette - Whisky Of The Week

Shauna Neill Jewellery #AW17 Collection - Brand & Product Shoot

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of working with Shauna Neill to create the look and feel for her Autumn & Winter collection of jewellery.

All Shauna Neill pieces are handmade in Durban, South Africa by a small team of previously unemployed women, who have trained in the art of jewellery making and general business skills. The range of necklaces, earrings, rings, and bangles is available online and in stores throughout South Africa, as well as in France, Italy, Austria, Namibia, Mauritius, Australia, the Seychelles, and the UK.

The Shauna Neill brand ethos is deeply rooted in the desire to create pieces which appeal to the contemporary woman wanting something unique and considered, that not everyone else is wearing.

Thank you to each and every one of the following creatives for working so hard to bring Shauna's dream to life, and for making my job oh-so-easy:

Here are some of my favourite photographs from the day.

Shadow The Korean Jindo at home in South Africa

It's nearly been a whole year since our rescue pup, Shadow The Jindo, arrived on South African soil.

Farmboy and I found Shadow as a teeny tiny little ball of fluff wondering along a dark country road late at night. We were living & teaching English in South Korea at the time, and had absolutely no plans, whatsoever, to adopt a dog. We were far too independent,  loved traveling, and if we were to get a pet, we would absolutely have to bring them back home to South Africa with us. Taking animals to South Africa is FAR more expensive than taking them to any other country (bar the UK which is also crazy) and so it never once crosses our minds. That is, until Shadow came along an stole our hearts.

Here he is as a teeny tiny pup:

If you're wondering what a Jindo is, it's a dog breed native to South Korea. Not much is known about them, and they aren't seen much outside of Korea unless bred by authorised breeders. A lot of the 'street' dogs in Korea are Jindo mixes, just like our precious pup Shadow.

Pure breed Jindo's come in 5 main coat colourings (white, brown/yellow, brindle, black & tan and grey). Shadow is of the 'black & tan' variety, but is most definitely a mix due his long hair and very long ears. We think he is crossed with Husky/German Shepard, but there is no real knowing unless a DNA test is done. He has 100% all of the characteristics of a Jindo (click here to read more about the breed) and we just adore him.

Shadow grew up in our teeny tiny Korean apartment, and is now loving his life roaming the wide open spaces of dairy farm life now that we are home in South Africa. We've had a few issues with him and getting his bathroom routine sorted out (well these issues are more to do with the fact that he is an incredibly private dog when it comes to his toilet time, and now regards out entire garden as his 'home' and will not, under any circumstances, soil his home!). This means he quite literally  'holds it in' until I take him for a walk where we can run free and find a suitably private place to do his business. Funny dog this one haha.

Anyway, here are some recent photographs I've taken of him in the months since we have been home. He is such a happy pooch, and the most incredible dog either of us have ever had. We both can't wait for the many happy years ahead of him as a big brother to our little baby coming along in September this year. My camera is going to be FULL of baby and pup pictures...I can't wait!

In the mean time, I hope you enjoy these photographs.

Previous Client Work: Bespoke Brand Photography for Travel Blog - Live Learn Venture

Travel Blog Brand photography by CGScreative bespoke brand photography for creatives, bloggers and business owners

Just before finishing up our final year in South Korea, I had the pleasure of working with Natasha, the lady behind the popular travel blog Live Learn Venture.

Natasha had gotten in touch with me to work on her brand photography for her travel blog, and was in the middle of a rebrand. She needed beautiful, high resolution images for her to use on her blog posts, as part of graphics for the main layout of her website and also wanted some updated headshots. All of what she needed forms part of Creative Headshot package (click here for more info) and we got started straight away on the planning stage of her shoot.

I also worked alongside my stylist friend Samantha (find her over at There She Goes Again) who is incredible at what she does. I've worked on lots of styled shoots with Sam and always love the energy and creativity she brings to shoots.

The Live Learn Venture brand is feminine and fun, but Natasha wasn't sure what her brand colours would end up being, and so we used the shoot to determine that for her. Using the backgrounds and textures of the various locations we shot at, it was very clear that shades of peach, grey and brown would form a big part of her new brand.  A big part of my work is ensuring my clients feel 100% comfortable in front of my camera, and this is how I am able to ensure I capture the personality and essence of each client and their brand. I loved working with Natasha, and I have loved seeing her brand develop and evolve since this shoot. She has put all of her new brand images to use on her new website, and it's incredible how the images have helped  her develop a wonderful cohesive style.

Below are a selection of the images I created exclusively for Live Learn Venture. If you're interested in finding out more about my headshot packages, then please feel free to get in touch. Each package includes a good mixture of styled stock type images as well as pretty portraits.

Enjoy!

Earlier last year, I had the pleasure of working with Sarah from Wonderland Graphic Design.

Sarah is based in the UK, and had purchased one of my images on CreativeMarket and had had a slight problem with her download. I quickly sorted out the issue for her, and we got chatting over Facebook and realised we had a couple of friends in common and that she lived in the same area I used to live in over 15 years ago! What a small world!

Soon afterwards we began chatting about my new service offering, Bespoke Brand Photography, and the rest they say, is history!

Joburg to Cape Town roadtrip via Poffadder, Springbok, Kaamieskroon, Bitterfontein & Yzerfontein with our dog to see the Namaqualand flowers!

Joburg to Cape Town roadtrip via Poffadder, Springbok, Kaamieskroon, Bitterfontein & Yzerfontein with our dog to see the Namaqualand flowers!

A few weeks after arriving back in South Africa from living in South Korea (click here to ready more about our 4 years spent teaching English in Korea), Farmboy and I headed off on a 6 week road trip around South Africa. We started our trip in Johannesburg (where my family are) and ended on the farm in Kwazulu Natal (where Farmboy's family are).

During those 6 weeks we visited about 15 towns and cities, some of which I had never heard of before, and had wonderful adventures seeing more of South Africa than either of us had seen before. This is a very image heavy post, so you might want to go and make yourself a cup of tea while you wait for these images to load :)

Farmboy also vlogged our trip, which you can watch by heading over to his youtube channel (click here). There are lots of fun behind the scenes videos of our trip, which I think you'll really enjoy.  I've linked them below so you can watch them right here in this post.

The aim of this trip was to see the famous Namaquland Daisies, as well as to explore more of Cape Town. When we got home from Korea, we wanted to spend time in the major cities in South Africa to see if we would like to settle and make home in any of them. This trip was the perfect opportunity to explore Cape Town and see if we could imagine ourselves making it our new home.

Professional Headshots & why your brand needs one instead of a grainy selfie

Professional Headshots & why your brand needs one instead of a grainy selfie

These days, social media makes it easier than ever for you to connect with your target audience online. This means your brand is on show ALL THE TIME, and people are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing who to work with. This is why it's so important to make sure your brand makes the right impression the moment a potential client or customer comes into contact with you.

For many of us, the first time our clients see us is on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, and so these social media platforms are the perfect place to showcase your profile photo instead of your logo.

The Holloway Shop - Floral Designs, Beautiful Bouquets and Foraging for flowers in Cape Town

I met Storm in Korea in 2013 while we were both teaching English in small towns not far from one another. We instantly became friends, not just because we are both South African (South Africans abroad tend to unintentionally seek each other out and end up forming these strange South African friendships circles, no matter how many other different nationalities we spend time with) and this was exactly what happened with us.

We worked on so many wonderful styled shoots together, with her as florist and stylist, and me as photographer (click here to see some of them) and I was very sad when she left Korea at the end of her contract. Now that we are all back in the same country again, the floral photograph can continue! Storm has started her own business (The Holloway Shop) creating and selling custom floral arrangements in Cape Town.

Of course, I couldn't wait to follow her around with my camera and capture all the beautiful things she does.

How to make Stock Photos work for your Brand + Beautiful Free Stock Photos for You!

You've downloaded every free stock image you can find, but you're still stuck with website & blog graphics you're not happy with.

You're tired of seeing the same stock images used in the same ways, everywhere you look.

You feel like the images out there don't fit your niche.

If you answered yes to any of the above, I hear you! I remember when I first started blogging (okay, to be honest it was way back when in the times before Pinterest and all the pretty that followed) and so my options for photographs to use on my blog were very limited. I basically had to either take my own photographs, or continue to use other peoples work (giving them credit of course).

I wasn't a big fan of using other people's photos, because the photos I was using weren't being meant for stock photo use. I was simply 'borrowing' their photography skills by using their photos, and I wanted to become completely self sufficient and do everything myself. I am so glad that I was stubborn back then, because if I hadn't started taking my own blog photos, I wouldn't be where I am today, about to launch a whole business dedicated to creating visuals for small business owners and creatives!

Lorryn Smit Photography - Custom Creative Styled Photographer Photo Shoot

Lorryn Smit Custom Creative Headshots Brand Styled Photoshoot by Roxy Hutton of CGScreative-05.png

Earlier this year I was contacted by Lorryn Smit from Lorryn Smit Photography. Lorryn wanted to book me for my signature styled photo-shoots, as she wanted photographs taken to showcase her and her photography business.

Lorryn is a fellow South African photographer, based here in South Korea who specialises in weddings and engagements. I was honoured to be contacted by her as I have been an avid admirer of her work for a long time.

Lorryn wanted me to capture her in a very natural setting, while she was actually doing her own photo shoot. It was almost a photography inception kind of setting, with me behind my lens, capturing her behind her lens. It was a lot of fun and I so enjoyed being 'behind-the-scenes' of a fellow photographer at work.

If you feel a little shy in front of the camera (let's be honest, who doesn't!) then having your photographs taken while you do something that you love and are passionate about is a wonderful way to produce natural photographs that show of the real you. You can find out more about my styled shoots and how to book me by clicking here.

We started off in Lorryn's home and studio in Gwangju where I was able to get some more styled, lifestyle shots of her workspace, and then we headed off a coffee shop downtown. After a quick coffee (and Lorryn touching base with her actual clients) we headed off to the Asian Culture Complex to make use of the beautiful winter light, before finishing off at a gorgeous pine forest.

A big thank you to Aimee Klass of Aimee Klass Makeup who did Lorryn's hair and makeup for this shoot.

Thank you for picking me to capture these photographs of you Lorryn. I had so much fun working with you and being a part of your photography journey too. You are incredibly talented and I look forward to seeing of your beautiful work.

You can find & connect with Lorryn at the following places:

High Street Fashion Inspired Styled Photo-Shoot in Buan, South Korea

Urban Fashion Inspired Styled Shoot in South Korea by Roxy Hutton of CGScreative CityGirlSearching Blog-05.png

Hi everyone! Not only do I use this blog to share business and blogging tips (click here to read more on that) but I also use this space to showcase my photography portfolio, especially the Styled shoots I love creating here in Korea.

This High Street Fashion shoot was shot on location in my small town here in Korea. I had so much fun working with my stylist friend Sam (who blogs over at There She Goes Again) and our two wonderful model friends, Heejoung and Stephanie (who blogs over at Hedgers Abroad).

This shoot was originally planned around the snow, but as tends to happen when you plan for a particular kind of weather, you usually end up with the opposite. So instead of soft, white snow, I got harsh, bright sunlight. But, we have to work with what we have and I'm really happy with how the photographs came out.

This shoot was something very different to what I usually do (click here to see some of the other styled shoots I have done), but I really enjoyed the challenge. If you have any ideas in mind of a story or theme you'd like me to capture, then please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. Click here to read more about my photography and to find out about my rates. I will only be available here in Korea until June this year (when Farmboy and I head back home to South Africa...yippe!).

The shoot would not have been possible without the following incredibly talented ladies. Thank you to all of you for all your help, for all your talents and for being so easy to work with:

And now the result of our High Street Fashion Inspired Styled Photo-shoot.

Enjoy!

Thank you again to each and every one of these ladies:

How to easily make photo collages for your blog and Facebook: A Blogstomp Tutorial

How to easily make photo collages for your blog and Facebook: A Blogstomp Tutorial

In order to build a cohesive brand, it's important to make sure the images & graphics you share are aligned with the look and feel of your business. An easy way to do this is to share groups of images (collages) that tell a story.

I use collages here on my blog when I want to share a lot of images, but I don't want to slow down my site loading speed.

Using full sized images in a blog post means lots and lots and lots of scrolling for your readers. Creating beautiful collages is an easy way to make your blog posts look better, and it helps the back end of your site by making it faster to load.

In today's blog post I'm sharing with you how I create collages for my blog and Facebook page using Blogstomp.
