{South Korea} Frustrations

Most of the time things are just peachy here in Korea. The people are incredibly kind and genuinely mean well even when trying to force something spicy down your gullet. But sometimes, you just have to shake your head and mumble between gritted teeth the age old saying here 'Only in Korea'.

About a month ago (right before we left for Malaysia) Farmboy and I booked flights to Mongolia (I know!). Our plan was to spend our next holiday (well, 3 days of public holidays coming up next week here in Korea and to take 2 days of unpaid leave) with two special friends who will be leaving Korea soon. We were a little hesitant to book flights without confirming unpaid leave with our schools, but we have done it before and there had been no problems then. We went ahead with paying for our non-refundable tickets and rushed up to Seoul to get our visas sorted out. Then when school opened again a few days later I met with my co-teacher to chat about getting my unpaid leave authorized.

Problem number 1.

"There has been new document that say Foreign Teacher cannot take unpaid leave these days", was the response I got. Our contracts are a little grey in the leave area, but as we had done it before, and I offered to make up any classes I might miss I really didn't expect to encounter any issues. Well that was a good start to my week. I even got to the point where I told her about non-refundable flights, but was met with a blank stare (language barrier? Cultural barrier? I couldn't care less barrier? Who knows). And that's how that conversation ended.

Farmboy, armed with his most expensive looking suit and tie (appearances are oh so very important here in Korea) arranged a meeting with the education supervisor in our province to chat about our dilemma. The suit may have helped a little, but the answer he got was very vague. Not quite a 'no' but in no clear means a 'yes'. So we waited for the next 2 weeks to get a straight answer.

Problem number 2.

Meanwhile I had been frantically researching and calling the airlines and booking websites I had gone through, cancelling flights for non emergency reasons usually results in the ticket bearer being issued with a voucher for future travel only valid on the booked airline for the cancelled flight. Ah man. I'm not sure we can head anywhere else but Mongolia on Mongolian air. And our visas were only valid for the stipulated number of days applied for.

What a flop!

Problem number 3.

We finally heard back from our supervisor (by a random text message).

 "Foreign teacher in Jeonbuk Province may not go abroad during semester time". Really? Then how is it that every other teacher we know in our province is leaving Korean soil for the Thanksgiving holiday? That message should have read "Dale and Roxy Teacher may not go abroad during semester time". Our main reason for coming to Korea was the opportunity we have to travel here. Well I guess we will just have to spend the holiday here exploring more of Korea.

Luckily I have the most persuasive husband in the whole world, who managed to charm the socks off the American call center and got us a 95% cash refund on our credit card. Other teachers in Korea suggested we take forced sick leave, others said we should just go and not say anything until we got back and then feign ignorance, but none of that quite sat right with me. I had wanted to be honest about our trip from the beginning, little lies (no matter how white) have a habit of spiraling out of control and biting you in the bum sooner or later.

And to be completely honest, we shouldn't have actually booked flights without getting our leave sorted out first. But you know how easy it is to get carried away with excitement, and that sneaky piece of plastic called a credit card makes online shopping far to easy.

And so my dear friend Mongolia, it just wasn't meant to me this time.

The lesson I have learned from all of this. Never assume anything. Especially here in Korea. Clarify everything (in writing is possible) before making and permanent decisions/bookings/commitments. Take deep breaths when you feel frustration building, and try to smile through it all even if you feel like punching someone in the face.

So next week, instead of images of vast open plains and shaggy weather beaten men wrapped in wool blankets, you will be getting something a little more Asian or should I say South Korean.

Some bright lights perhaps, cat cafes and coffee shops, high end street fashion and one or lovey dovey photographs of us as we celebrate our one year wedding anniversary in Seoul. It's not Mongolia, but it will do.

Boys and their Toys

So, hubby has a new hobby.

Which is great, really, it is.

But here in Korea our living space is pretty compact, and when the propellors and the tape come out all hell breaks loose in the kitchen/living room/lounge/dining room.

Secretly I love to watch him as he sits and tinkers away with his glue gun and foam board. I'm really proud of him for making this little guy from scratch, wings and wheels included. He's had a bit of a rocky start, not quite making it off the ground before something inevitably snaps off, but today I have a good feeling.

Besides, its a good day to fly here in South Korea. The sky is blue, and fluffy white clouds are dancing above our heads.

Happy Sunday everyone!

A trip to Korea's most prized possession...Dokdo Island {Instagram}

Farmboy and I were lucky enough to be selected to join a small group of other English Teachers here in South Korea on a trip to Dokdo Island. Dokdo Island is currently part of South Korea territory, but there is constant unrest between Korea and Japan as to who it really belongs to. Us "Foreigners" really had no idea just how patriotic South Koreans feel about the Island, and this trip really opened our eyes to their passion and fighting spirit to keep Dodko Korean.

It was an incredible opportunity that a mere 1% of all South Koreans will ever get a chance to actually see and experience, and for that we are so grateful. The trip was 4 days and 3 nights, full of very long bus trips and ferry rides, strange meals for breakfast and sleeping on the floor. But we were rewarded with spectacular scenery, history, culture and powerful understanding.

Here are a few of my Instagram snaps from the trip.

Enjoy!

Snaps from Seoul

Just before our early morning flight to Malaysia (we spent a week on the Perhenetian Islands for our summer holidays here) we spent the night in the capital of South Korea, Seoul.

 Here are a few iPhone snaps of here and there (including a few of the Dog Cafe we visited...click here if you missed the post!).

{Nail Art} class with my school girls

Farmboy and I are teaching English in South Korea. We up and left our cosy little lives in Pietermaritzburg in June 2013, and headed back to Asia to make our millions and of course travel the world!

Farmboy teaches at five schools, two of which are on an island...Crazy stuff! But, every day is different and exciting. He teaches at both elementary and middle schools. I am at one school, an all girls middle school. At first I was really nervous to start teaching the girls, I am after all, foundation phase trained and loved teaching my little kiddies. But after my first day I am convinced God has put us in these different situations for his gain. All our schools suit our different personalities and talents in just the right way.

Besides, now I get to teach English classes like this one:

I'm back!

Farmboy and I have just settled back into our little apartment after an incredible week in Malaysia. 2 flights, 3 taxis, 2 buses, 1 subway & copious amounts of walking...we finally touched back down on Korean soil this afternoon...what a journey home, I'm shattered!

I can't wait to share the photographs with all of you, and let you know what it was like. Here are a few instagram snaps until I get editing. I hope you are all having a wonderful relaxing weekend.

All of these photographs were taken with my iPhone, and most were edited with the wonderful #ABeautifulMess app. Click here to find out more about more about it.

{b}logging off for a week

I hope you are all enjoying the eighth month of the year. As I'm sure you're all thinking, this year has truly flown by...next month hubby and I will be celebrating our one year wedding anniversary, I can't believe it. It's all gone incredibly fast and I love him more and more each day. How he puts up with all my nonsense ill never know, but I'm so glad he does :)

We are spending the night in the fashion capital of the world, Seoul, before catching an early flight to Malaysia tomorrow....eek! So excited! We are heading to the Perhentian Islands for our summer holiday here in Korea.

I won't be on the blog until we get back, and I'm looking forward to some quality time away from all the social media (although you might catch the odd instagram pic here and there if you follow along @roxypearce that is if we manage to score any wifi).

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and a good start to the end of the year.

Here's our new headgear for next week :)

Teachers Workshop {South Korea}

Last week the eight of us English Teachers here in Buan, South Korea headed to the city of Jeonju for a workshop/day out. We were taken to a studio where we got to decorate our own tradition Korean fans, taken on a tour of the old portraits of the Kings, toured a gorgeous vintage camera museum and finally out for a lovely dinner. It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.

Here are a few snaps of the day (don't you love Farmboy's caterpillar fan?)

Crystal Waters, Drakensberg

Crystal Waters Places to Stay Drakensburg by Roxy Hutton CGScreative CityGirlSearching Blog_Artboard 2_Artboard 3.png

This past weekend was spent with my hubby's family in the Drakensberg at a little piece of heaven called Crystal Waters. Nestled away between lush green trees and open fields of golden grass lies 3 stone cottages and a trout dam. Electricity was limited to a few 110 V light bulbs, while gas provided us with hot water and a place to cook yummy meals.

This was one of our last weekends spent in South Africa, before we jet setted off to Asia on the 20th June 2013.

I hope you all had a wonderfully relaxing weekend, and are ready for the week ahead!

Happy Monday everyone!

It's Official...We are South Korea Bound!

A few weeks ago I mentioned some new adventures Farmboy & I have lined up. Well everything seems to have fast tracked and we are set to leave South Africa on the 20th June (a few nights stop over in Hong Kong) and then arrive in South Korea around the 24th.

I've got lots of lovely posts lined up for the our last few weeks here, and then, well, you'll just have to wait and see...

{Road Trip} away from the blog...

Dear readers,

I am typing this post from the gorgeous town/city/plekkie of Knysna. Farmboy had lots of important work related stuff to do here in the Western & Eastern Cape, and I have been lucky enough to tag along for the ride. So there won't be much posted on here until we hit home this weekend. In the mean time, here are some photographs (albeit Instagram snaps) till then.

I hope you are all having a wonderful week.

{Our little home}

Just a few snaps of the little space here in Pietermaritzburgt that we call home. Farmboy and I have been living here for a little over six months (yes! It's been over six months since we said 'I Do' in an old farm shed!), and well, we are {hopefully} only going to be here for another two...Not because we don't love this place, but because we have some adventurous travel plans lined up and are hoping to be out exploring this big bad world of ours :)

So, before its too late I wanted to share a few photos using my new camera {my lovely Canon 60D was stolen a few weeks ago...very sad face! We were not expecting insurance to pay us out at all, so when we got a sms notification at 4am the other morning confirming our payout we were overjoyed!}

I will post some piccies of my new camera soon...but for now, a few snaps of our little home.

#SouthernWedding {Dear Chloe Photography}

This weekend Farmboy and I headed out to Dragon Peaks Mountain Resort in the Drakensburg to celebrate a very special wedding. Jarrod met the Houston based Ria on twitter last year. They connected through their love of CrossFit, got engaged on his recent trip to the States, and here we are, witnessing true love that isn't bound by distance. Jared & Ria, we wish you both a lifetime of happiness!

These gorgeous photographs were taken by my very talented friend Chloe, who is the beauty and the brains behind Dear Chloe Photography. While not the official photographer, these photographs are a sneak peek for all of use while we wait to see those taken by the official photographer.

Chloe is branching out into wedding photography, and is oh so very happy to travel :) Have a squizz at here other work here, and check our her website here.

Farmboy and I had a little mini photo shoot ourselves, don't we clean up good ;)

Korean Samgyupsal...South African Style

A few pangs for Korean food left us with a slight longing to return to Korean soil...to combat that for the time being, Farmboy and I set about recreating one of our favourite meals, Samgyupsal. Samgyupsal is traditionally thick, fatty slices of pork belly meat, usually neither marinated nor seasoned. It's cooked on a grill by each person and eaten directly from the grill. It is often dipped into a spicy pepper paste.

Here is a photo of the real deal in South Korea (taken when my mommy came to visit!), followed by our attempt a few days ago...

The Philippines...looking back

Philippines

While Farmboy and I were teaching English in South Korea in 2010, we spent the second of our holidays with Farmboy's brother and sister-in-law (who were teaching in Japan) in the Philippines. Here are some special photographs, taken by my wonderful husband. I learnt all I know about a camera from him.

We flew from Incheon & landed in Puerto Princessa. From there we took a 9 hour shuttle to El Nido where we spent 6 days, of which were spent on an Island hopping tour. At the time El Nido was incredibly small, with just one road of restaurants and cafes. It has since increased in size but I have heard that it is still a very special place to visit. You can now fly directly into El Nido saving you a very long and uncomfortable ride from Puerto Princessa. If you get to El Nido, make sure to hire a scooter and head of in search of Nacpan beach, a beautiful stretch of coastline.

Sun, Sea & Sand in {Sodwana Bay}

Hello again friends! I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend, and that you all are feeling refreshed and ready for yet another short week, in preparation for lots of stuffing of faces with Easter eggs and hot cross buns!

Farmboy and I, along with our friends Kelly & Nathan headed off to Sodwana Bay (near the Mozambique border, up the North Coast) for the long weekend, with tents and blow up mattresses in tow. Apart from a very nasty incident last wednesday evening when my precious camera and Farmboy's work laptop were 'liberated' from my LOCKED car (using who knows what kind of sci-fi tech) but apart from that, the weekend was swell. Here are some snaps taken with Nathan's iPhone (ah man I really am mad about Instagram) with being without a camera and all...

{If you are ever looking for a holiday destination that feels very exotic and tropical, with incredible snorkeling and only about a 4.5 hour drive from PMB, then head out to Sodwana Bay}

Our Wedding {The Food}

Here are some photographs (taken by our awesome photographer on the day Jacki Bruniquel) of the food we had at our wedding in September last year. Farmboy and I were very particular about the kind of food we were after, we were wanting mezze style platter with lots and lots of choice for everyone. We had the most phenomenal catering company Harris & Homes, headed up by the wonderful Sarah.

Our menu was written up on home made chalkboards which were hung up above the food. Canape starters were served outside while the guests mingled and chatted during the family photo session.

Salads, sides and mains were served on gorgeous wooden boards, with sauces and jams served in little glass bottles.

Our dessert station/Candy Bar, was placed on a beautiful on yellow wood cabinet type stand that Farmboy found himself, and jars were filled with every sweetie you can think of.

We opted for red-velvet cupcakes as well as a rose topped red-velvet cake for our wedding cake.

Every last detail was thought of, and Sarah helped to make all our foodie dreams come true. See for yourself...

Our Engagement Photo-shoot

A little while ago I posted a sneak peak of our Engagement Shoot by our special friends Sophie and her husband Cameron. I met Sophie through Dale, while studying at Rhodes University. Sophie and Cam both live in Cape Twon, and Sophie (who is a Photo Journalist by trade) shoots weddings, engagements and a host of other things too. Click here to check out her blog.

These are the photographs of our engagement shoot from May 2012. It feels like this was a lifetime ago, as since then we have moved across the globe (for the second time) and are well and settled into life in South Korea.

You can see all of our wedding related blog posts by clicking here.
