Zanzibar through photographs - highlights of our Babymoon through Stonetown, Pingwe, Nungwi & Fumba

It’s been a hot minute since I last wrote a travel blog post; and by travel I mean OVERSEAS or INTERNATIONAL trip and this was the last one hubby and I did, and it was back in 2021, during those crazy Co(n)vid days. I’ve always been one to swim upstream, so yes, the idea of traveling, 32 weeks pregnant with baby #3, to an African (ghasp…malaria ridden country) during a global ‘pandemic’ didn’t frighten me in the least. We had a WONDERFUL time but did swear to ourselves to never travel during Ramadan again. For some reason many of our travels have coincided with Ramadan and this has left us rather limited by restaurants & eating out options as we love to really immerse ourselves in the street food & more local establishments of the places we visit.

{Here is a link to the first Babymoon we had…to Italy…when I was pregnant with our first child, Everly. What a wonderful trip that was! I also looked remarkably fresh and fun loving, but the first baby will do that to you…unlike how I was looking & feeling with baby #3 haha).

I spent some time this morning going back through all my travel blog posts and it was evident to me just how much life BC (ie before children) was so free and open to any and all possibilities. Now our priorities have, understandably changed, but I have it in my heart to pack a backpack again soon and head off on a jetplane with hubby. Who knows, maybe we will get to do that in the next year or so, after which we would love to do it with all our kiddies, with South Korea being first on the list!

Here is a quick run down of where we went and how long we spent in each place:

Stonetown > 2 nights

Pingwe > 2 nights

Nungwi > 3 nights

Fumba > 3 nights

We flew from Johannesburg and had initially booked tickets with Mango airlines; but unfortunately for us, they went into business rescue the week before our departure…gosh what a nightmare that was. We lost the flights, sadly, but as the rest of our trip was already booked and mostly paid for, we scrapped all our pennies together and booked new flights with Kenya Airlines. At the time the flights were very reasonably priced, and we were determined to go on that trip!

Stonetown

2 nights at Jafferji House & Spa (breakfast included)

Pingwe

2 nights at Kapengaro Beach Villas (Now called Bitcoin Beach Hotel) which was unfortunately all under renovations when we stayed here. It looks amazing now!

We ate at the famous Rock Restaurant (you can’t choose the weather!) and sadly my photos look nothing like the ones on the web haha. This restaurant was the whole reason we chose to spend some nights here, and looking back I would probably recommend rather staying up north in Nungwi or down south in Pumba and rather make the long day trip to eat and explore and then head home. There wasn’t much more to do in Pingwe other than the Rock Restaurant.

Nungwi

This was our splure stay as we spent 3 nights at the Hilton DoubleTree Resort. I sadly could not make use of their amazing drinks packages (being pregannt and all) but the all inclusive packages were really well priced.

Fumba

Another splurge for the last 3 nights of our holiday at the Fumba Beach Lodge…worth every cent! The food was a bit dissapointing at that time (with Covid restrictions meaning access to food was a challenge) and as it was the only place to eat in the area, we were forced to just eat here. Apart from that, this lodge is a very special place for the ultimate relaxing holiday. We hope to be back with the kids one day.

We also did a local coffee plantation tour during our stay which was really fun, and highly recommended.

Here is also a travel video Hubby put together of our trip…enjoy!

Italy Through Photographs - Highlights of our three week Babymoon through Milan, Lake Como, Bologna, Rome, Venice, Florence, Tuscany, Pisa, Amalfi, Naples & Bergamo

In June this year, Farmboy and I headed to Italy for 21 days of {backpacking} adventure to celebrate our baby-moon (or rather, the celebrate our last few moments of life as we know we it before our little girl joins us in September).

I will be writing travel guides for all of the places we visited, but it's going to take me a while. Along with our trip to India last year (eeeek I still have yet to finish the travel guides for that!) this was one of the most extensively planned trips we have ever done. This was all due to the fact that we had to have ALL our bookings (trains, planes, accommodation, buses etc) booked ahead of time in order to secure Farmboys Schengen Visa. I am lucky enough to hold dual citizenship and so have a British Passport, which makes traveling a breeze for me, but which unfortunately gives poor Farmboy no special treatment.

We stayed in AirBnb's for 90% of the trip, only staying in Hotels on the Amalfi coast when we couldn't find an AirBnb within our budget. We were backpacking (or rather, Farmboy was...I carried the camera bag and of course our little baby) and managed to survive 3 weeks living out of a 13kg bag.

I will be sharing more on what we packed (including what toiletries I packed) in another post. I also will write more on what traveling while being 6 months pregnant is like soon.

All in all, it was FAR easier than I had thought. Bonus...being able to skip all the queues at the airports!

Here is a breakdown of our 20 day trip:

Johannesburg > Istanbul, Turkey > Milan

Milan (1 night)

Milan > Bellagio, Lake Como (2 nights)

Bellagio > Milan > Venice (2 nights)

Venice > Bologna (1 night)

Bologna > Florence (1 night)

Florence > Todi, Tuscany/Umbira (3 nights)

Todi > Rome (3 nights)

Rome > Amalfi Coast (1 night in Ravello & 3 nights in Conca dei Marini)

Amalfi Coast > Naples (1 night)

Naples > Bergamo (1 night)

Bergamo > Milan > Istanbul, Turkey > Johannesburg

It's going to take some time before the travel guides are up, so in the mean time, here are a few of the photographic highlights of our trip.

We bought a second hand Fujifilm x100T especially for the trip, and had planned to only take that camera along but I ended up taking my Nikon D750 at the last minute. I'm so glad I did as it took me a while to figure out how the Fujifilm worked and to get used to it. So here are my photographs from both cameras.

Farmboy is working on a travel video too, which I'll link up here in this post when it's done.

Enjoy!

Here are some of my other Travel Guides for you to browse through in the mean time while I create the guides for Italy.

Enjoy!
